Merida, from the animated movie Brave, has just been inducted into the pantheon of Disney Princesses. As the daughter of a king and the star of a Disney/Pixar movie, she does seem like an obvious choice. The only problem is that prior to being officially crowned as a Disney Princess, she was given a makeover.
In Brave, Merida has messy, curly hair to match her rebellious personality. She wears a long, plain dress, looks like normal girl in her early teens, and is seldom seen without her bow and arrow. Disney’s “Princess” Merida tells a different story: flowing hair, a more “adult” figure and facial features, and an off-the-shoulder dress with sparkly details. I AM SO MAD ABOUT THIS. I loved this movie precisely for all the reasons listed in the article, and would have loved her infinitely more if the movie had come out when I was little. (See also: MULAN. I wasn’t athletic but I loved tomboyish girls because I never felt especially feminine as a kid, either.) It’s so distressing to see Disney reinforcing the notion that there’s only one kind of girl who would be interested in their various properties. There are lots of different types of girls! I mean, it’s bad enough they slap a pair of c-cups on Snow White, who’s essentially 14, but this?
JUST FUCK OFF WITH THIS SHIT, DISNEY. You’re undermining your own messages, and it’s… it’s fucking laughable…
Also, taking away her bow and arrow? The real Merida would’ve put up one hell of a fight, and she sure as hell wouldn’t be smiling. Nor would she be seen dead in that turquoise abomination.
looks like they need about 40k more signatures.
